Lödöse - A medieval forerunner of Gothenburg
Lödöse was founded during the 11th century, and became an important commerce port in medieval Sweden. For many years, Lödöse was the only westward port.
The city was forced to relocate in 1473, which ended the first episode in the founding history of Gothenburg.
When Lödöse finally lost its city charter in 1646 it was a venerable port, at least 500 years old. It can be considered a medieval forerunner of Gothenburg.
Lödöse museum has three permanent exhibitions; Medieval Lödöse, Images of our Ancestors and Wharfs and Shipping. Read more about them under Exhibitions in the menu to the left.
